ADOPT-AN-APARTMENT
Ruth, Mary and Martha, and Hannah need makeovers! Some
20 apartments in our Transitional and Emergency Housing
require varying degrees of remodeling--paint, furniture,
window treatments, and in some cases rugs or carpet.
The families living there also need Christian love and
encouragement. We are looking for churches, Bible or
civic groups, or families to sponsor one of these apartments
as a project by providing the paint, furniture, household
items and volunteers. Consider this opportunity for
building fellowship and teamwork in your group, in addition
to investing in the life of a family.
FOOD PANTRY WORKERS
One Saturday a month the Manna Market offers our families
the opportunity to "grocery shop" for canned
foods and some specialty meat and vegetable items. Residents'
grocery orders are filled and bagged, then carried by
volunteers to the resident's apartment.
Hours of Operation: typically 2nd Saturday of the month
from 9:30-11:00am
Location: 9th Street Campus (1353 9th Street @ the corner
of Forest Ave.)
FOOD PANTRY SPONSORS
He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food
to the hungry. Psalm 146:7
Many individuals, churches, and groups bless us each
year by donations of food for our Food Pantry. Despite
this generosity, each month we find it necessary to
purchase items from the Food Bank to supplement these
donations, at an average monthly cost of $125. Our goal
is to sponsor out the Food Pantry each month of the
year to a church or group. When you sign up for a specific
month, we will supply you with a list of items needed
for that month's Food Pantry and details for delivery.
Sponsorship will require some coordination and work
to organize, but is an easy and effective way to give
to those in need.
MOTHER'S RETREAT SPONSORS
Mother's retreat sponsors - Good Samaritan's Family
Ministry team is planning the annual retreat for our
mothers. We need a facility to host this overnight getaway
and meals for some twenty women. Additionally, we would
like to present gift baskets and prizes. This year's
theme is Times of Refreshing.

SATURDAY SAMARITANS
One Saturday a month we plan a special time for the
mothers in our Family Growth Program to get together
for some fun and away-time from the kids. Women's church
groups are encouraged to organize a special event or
outing for the moms. Some ideas for fellowships would
include a brunch, tea or luncheon, bargain fashion shows,
makeovers, craft projects, scrapbooking. Youth and men's
groups can help out by providing child care and organizing
activities, or taking the kids on their own special
outing (zoo, park, or other kid-related activities).
KIDZ KORNER
Mission: Share the love of God, provide care for and
build relationships with the children of Good Samaritan.
Here's a great volunteer opportunity for youth, college
or adult groups, but is definitely not exclusive to
groups! Supervise and have fun with children living
in our Transitional Housing, ranging in age from infant
to eleven, while their moms attend group life-skills
classes and Bible study. Activities may include free
play, group games, Bible time, crafts, skits, or songs.
We are looking for a number of churches or groups to
sponsor one night on a monthly or every-other-month
basis.
Hours of Operation: Tuesday & Thursday evenings,
6:15 to 8:00pm
Location: 1353 9th Street, Apt. # 5 (SE corner of 9th
Street and Forest Avenue)
Volunteer Needs: 6-10 volunteers needed; open to high
school volunteers accompanied by at least one adult
WHIZ KID'S TUTORING
is a discipleship program for at-risk children in 1st
to 5th grades, through one-one-one tutoring relationships
with a Christian adult. Children are identified through
the public schools. While Whiz Kids helps children develop
academic skills, more importantly, it gives them the
opportunity to hear about the love of Jesus Christ.
In a safe atmosphere where the tutor and child work
alone, relationships are molded and the child discovers
the joy of learning. Each tutoring location has an on-site
coordinator during tutoring and furnished learning materials.
Best of all, no teaching experience is necessary. If
you can read and love children, we need and want you!
Each tutor will meet with their child once a week at
a local city church. Sites generally operate starting
around 6:30 or 7:00pm, one night a week Monday through
Thursday, and run about an hour and a half. Several
site options [link to site locations on Whiz Kid's page]
allow tutors to pick the night that best fits their
schedule. This year's tutoring session runs last week
of September through the second week of April, and requires
a one-year commitment.
Volunteer Age Requirements: Open to 10th graders and
up (tutors under the age of 18 are required to provide
pastoral recommendation)

Positions Available:
The manpower needed for a Whiz Kids Tutoring program
revolves around three volunteer positions. The a) Site
Coordinator works to make the site conducive
to learning and sharing the gospel. The Coordinator
maintains communication between Good Samaritan Urban
Ministries, the tutors, and the students. The b) Biblical
Instructor shares the Bible teaching at the end
of the evening. Often the Site Coordinator is also the
Biblical Instructor. The c) tutor
works one-on-one with the child. The number of
tutors available determines the size of the site. No
teaching experience is required for the volunteers,
only a heart to share the love of God with a child.
HOPE FOR YOUTH MENTORING
offers a Christ-centered approach to reach young inner-city
teens who risk heading down a path of destruction. We
seek to rescue hurting youth through Christian relationships
that build Godly character, develop vocational and recreational
interests, and point them down the path leading to the
hope found in Jesus Christ.
To carry out this mission, each youth will be guided
by a discipleship coordinator through a highly-structured
Christ-centered program which will challenge each youth
to dream, set goals, and develop skills. We firmly believe,
as taught in Proverbs 22:6, that if we "train a
child up in the way he should go, when he is old he
will not turn from it."
Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors in a one-on-one
relationship. Mentors will be asked to meet with their
child once a week to serve as a role model, offer encouragement,
and allow the child to develop a loving Christian relationship.
Mentors will be matched with a child with similar interests.
Mentors may take their child to various recreational
activities, family outings or meet at the Youth Campus
to enjoy quiet time or participate in the recreational
activities there. Mentors are asked to make a minimum
of a one year-commitment to their child.
Volunteer Age Requirements: 21 years of age minimum
